Providing people in France with an outstanding Games experience has always been Paris 2024’s ambition. The Mass Participation Marathon sets out this promise by offering opportunities for as many people as possible to get close to the heart of the Games adventure, following in the footsteps of the Olympic athletes, on the same route as the Olympic marathon event. For the first time in history, running events open to the general public will be organised, with a full marathon and also a 10km race. They will be run by night, ensuring the best running conditions for all runners. Like the Olympic Games in general, the Mass Participation Marathon is committed to ensuring gender parity, with Paris 2024 looking to award the same number of race entries to both men and women.
A unique experience, with two race formats
There will be something for everyone, with two event formats available to people who win a race entry. Both races, for the first time in the history of the Games, will allow participants to live an extraordinary sporting, sensory and emotional experience.
Legendary distance: the marathon
A marathon format will be following the same route as the Olympic athletes. This marathon format aims to be open to anyone who would like to push their limits and be part of an exceptional moment following the same route as the Olympic athletes. The runners will be able to follow in the footsteps of the male and women athletes who will fight for the marathon olympic titles. Open to everyone aged 20 and over, this marathon, which will set out from the Hôtel de Ville at 9pm and finish on the Esplanade des Invalides, in Paris by night, looks set to be truly unforgettable.
- 42km loop linking Paris and Versailles
- Starting at the Hôtel de Ville in Paris at 9pm
- Finishing at Les Invalides
- Passing through 9 districts: Paris – Boulogne-Billancourt, Sèvres, Ville d’Avray, Versailles, Viroflay, Chaville, Meudon and Issy-les-Moulineaux
- 20,024 participants
A marathon full of history

The route for the 42.195km version of the Mass Participation Marathon will be the same as the Olympic marathon: paying tribute to a key moment from the history of France and the French Revolution – the Women’s March on Versailles on 5 October 1789. This march was a popular, revolutionary event led by women that marked the history of contemporary France and saw several thousand women march on Versailles to bring the king and his family back to Paris, where people faced starvation. Louis XVI never left Paris again and notably signed the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizens, which he had previously refused to do.
After setting out from the square in front of Paris’ City Hall, the runners will cross the capital for a spectacular race, against a backdrop of the Paris region’s most beautiful monuments, before reaching Versailles and then returning to the finishing line on the Esplanade des Invalides. A magical moment, with intense emotions : an outstanding and emotional sporting adventure and a unique moment in history.
Second accessible format open to everyone: the 10k
A shorter format, open to everyone, but more accessible than a 42km format, will be available with a 10km race, also ran by night. The 10km route will take in a number of iconic places and monuments at the heart of Paris, with a range of special events and activities organised to enable everyone to enjoy an intense and unforgettable moment in the parisian night.
Open to anyone over the age of 16, this race will be accessible for all profiles, whatever their age or disability, for a magical race at the heart of Paris. The 10km route will be accessible for anyone with a disability, whatever their specific needs (guide, wheelchair, all-terrain chair, etc.), provided that they will be aged 16 or over by 31 December 2024.
- 10km at the heart of Paris and its iconic monuments
- Starting at Paris’ City Hall at 11:30pm
- Finishing at Les Invalides
- All in Central Paris
- 20,024 participants

A magical, celebratory and popular moment of sport
Running along the same route as the Olympic marathon, in a celebratory atmosphere alongside thousands of sports enthusiasts just a few hours after the male athletes, crossing the same finishing line just a few hours before the women’s Olympic marathon runners… The Mass Participation Marathon will create unforgettable lifelong memories for those who get the opportunity to enjoy the two routes on offer.
