Paris 2024 concept : sound stewardship supporting spectacular games

Games deployed at the heart of the city, Games anchored in Seine-Saint-Denis, Games combining spectacular events and sustainability. The promise made by Paris 2024 at the time of its bid is becoming a reality. By combining responsible stewardship with staging at the capital’s most iconic venues for a complete sporting and cultural spectacle, Paris 2024 is setting out a unique Olympic and Paralympic concept. By using existing facilities, Paris 2024 will minimise its investment budget and carbon footprint, through a concept with a strong focus on responsibility.

Olympic concept

Paralympic concept

France welcomes more than 80 million visitors each year, with 34 million in its capital alone. Paris 2024 will leverage the strengths that make France the world’s number-one tourist destination to stage an unforgettable Games, designed to show consideration for the athletes and promote sport above all else. As Tony Estanguet reminds us: “The five continents are looking forward to coming to Paris!

Approved by the Executive Board on 17 December 2020, the proposed concept has been developed working closely with local and regional authorities, the international sports federations for the Olympic and Paralympic sports, the IOC and the IPC. The sharing of competition venues between the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games was one of the priorities, while minimising temporary venues to focus on using many existing facilities. The maximisation of each venue has been thought out with a view to streamlining costs and making full use of the venues throughout the competition days.

With 24 Olympic sports (out of 32) located within 10 km of the Village, the Paris 2024 Games will be compact and accessible. The events will be more convenient for athletes and staff, more cost-effective with limited travel, and livelier with easy access for spectators and journalists. The Paris 2024 concept combines competition and celebration, and brings athletes and fans closer together.

Sound stewardship supporting spectacular Games

Iconic venues in the city will be transformed into sports arenas to provide a richer experience for spectators and an outstanding backdrop for sporting achievements: Les Invalides, Grand Palais, Grand Palais Overlay, Champ de Mars, Eiffel Tower, Champs-Elysées, Château de Versailles, etc.

World‑class sports venues will be in the spotlight for the world’s largest event with the Games: Stade de France, Stade Roland-Garros, La Défense Arena, Bercy Arena, Golf National, National Velodrome, etc.

Various sports venues will be built or renovated to ensure a lasting legacy for the communities and regions, including the creation of a permanent climbing facility in Seine-Saint-Denis.

Compact concept

The Olympic and Paralympic Village will be located 7 km north of the centre of Paris and less than 2 km from the Stade de France. Athletes and staff will benefit from short journeys, leaving more time for recovery. Spectators will be able to access all the competition venues on foot or with public transport.

24 Olympic sports (out of 32) will be located within 10 km of the Village: aquatic sports, archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, breaking, cycling, fencing, football, gymnastics, hockey, judo, rugby, shooting, skateboarding, sport climbing, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting, wresting. If we add rowing, canoe, equestrian, golf and the modern pentathlon to this list, 29 Olympic sports (out of 32) are located within 30 km of the Village.

Concept respecting regional balances

At the heart of the project, from the bid phase, the Seine-Saint-Denis department has a key position. Five Olympic sports will be hosted in the Seine-Saint-Denis department: athletics, aquatic events (artistic swimming, diving, water polo), sport climbing, rugby sevens and shooting. In addition, two Paralympic events will provide a unique opportunity to showcase this region with spectators and television viewers from around the world: the Paralympic marathon and the Paralympic road cycling race. These two events and the mass cycling event will take in various locations across the department.

Olympic and Paralympic concepts aligned

The two events, which will be two weeks apart, will strictly follow the same principles. When possible, it has been decided that the Paralympic events will be held at the same venues as the Olympic events. This is true for 15 of the 24 sports, including table tennis and Para-table tennis, swimming and Para-swimming, judo and Para-judo, and taekwondo and Para-taekwondo.
